Inson Wongsam was a son of Ms. Pao and Mr. Muan Wongsam. His mother was a weaver. His father was a skilled craftsman on handicraft and design for silverware and gold ornament including a community coordinator such as temple of Yong people in Lamphun province. Inson Wongsam practiced and helped his father to make handicraft until familiar to Lanna handicraft since was born. A passion in arts and a respect to his father became an inspiration for Inson Wongsam to work as craftsman and aimed to do for the best following his father who was his role model. “All of my life wants to do nothing but art and being an artist”
Inson Wongsam studied primary school at Pasang district and started secondary school at Chakkhamkhanathon school until graduated high school. He aimed to study further in Art but no approach until met senior artist from Pasang district, Tawee Nantakwang, who suggested him to study at College of Fine Art and Silpakorn University. Finally, he graduated bachelor’s degree about sculpture in 1961 from Faculty of Painting, Sculpture and Graphic Arts, Silpakorn University.
When he graduated from Silpakorn University in 1961, Inson Wongsam had got an idea to record his travel by art and he got a scholarship for 800 baht from Bangkok Artist Association consisted of Damrong Wongupparat, Tawee Ratchaneekorn, Pruang Pleansaisueb as a motivation for him to travel and painting around Thailand for a year. Inson Wongsam recorded his experience of touching terrain, scenery, and cultural lifestyle in every part of Thailand about 50 years ago through sketch, drawing, tempera painting, watercolor painting, and woodcut. When he finished his work, his products were sponsored by Tourist Organization of Thailand to hold an exhibition titled “Thailand Panorama” at Office of Thailand Tourism on December 22, 1961.
The inspiration from his father and Professor Silpa Bhirasri motivated Inson Wongsam to seek the experience of life and art. He decided to travel in Europe to visit Professor Silpa Bhirasri’s hometown therefore he wrote a project and asked for fund from Berlie Jucker company, the distributor of Lambretta scooter from Italy in Thailand. During that time, he had got fund from ESSO (Thailand) as fuel cost. Pocket money from Tourism Authority of Thailand (TTT) and his Silpakorn friends. In June 1962, only a week after the death of Professor Silpa Bhirasri. Inson Wongsam, 28 years old at that time headed South of Siam along the sea by his scooter before shipped to Malaysia across India ocean to Calcutta. He missed a ferry, so he had to wait for a month before arriving in India then further to Pakistan, Iran, Turkey, and Greece.
Inson Wongsam stayed at Corfu in Greece more than 6 months and began his abstract art there. Finally, in 1963 Inson Wongsam arrived in Rome, Italy and visited the hometown of Professor Silpa Bhirasri near Florence. The 18 – month – adventure on scooter, he showed his works in gallery of each city he passed from Asia to Europe. After the scooter broke down, he left it at Thai Embassy in Rome and traveled to Vienna, Austria, and Zurich, Switzerland then went to Paris, France for studying in design at Ecole Nationale Superieure Des Arts Decoratifs for 3 years.
From France, Inson Wongsam decided to live in New York United States, which was a center of modern art for 8 years. He began a designer assistance about ornament and furniture by utilizing his craftsman skill inheriting from his father and basic of art taught by Professor Silpa Bhirasri. The skills from hired design works inspired him to make a welding art spent 6 years regularly. This artwork was a small 400 pieced sculpture. His imagination was to design machine for toxin removal in water and air. Inson Wongsam asked for fund about 7 billion dollars from Ford to make it happen, but it was denied.
After the great depression in United States, Inson Wongsam went back to Thailand in 1974 but he still held the idea to create an artwork for stimulating consciousness of nature and environment preservation. Inson Wongsam went to work in tree farms at Ban Huai Fai far from Pasang 35 kilometers. He met a villager who was burning teaks for clearing area to cultivate. Seeing scattered stumps, he regrated and wanted to recreate an artwork for adding values to art and community consciousness. The sculpture from Huai Fai was in a single shape or original shape of chump. Burnt hollow was kept in the same shape then set vertically and horizontally as a nature of wood for showing the outstanding beauty of wood in a concept of ‘making wood to be wood’.
After living and creating artwork in forest of Ban Huai Fai for 3 years, Inson Wongsam moved back to Pasang district at Ban Pasang Noi. Now it is Ban Pan district, Muang, Lamphun province. Here his wife, Venetia Walkey, and he founded Dhamma park and art gallery in his house. This was a cultural project and exhibited his artworks in 25 housings on 28 rai of area used for being a learning source and public benefit for people in community. This caused the consciousness development for local and community.
Inson Wongsam went to Balgaria located Southern East of Europe and visited an artist village of stone carving in Zimbabwe, Africa. He stayed there for 3 months to create a stone carving artwork because he was enchanted in material and method of carving stone by local artists. For him, a stone was not a mass of mineral, but it was an energy of pureness from primitive without soiling of civilization. Purity and nature approach of African art influenced his creation. The visiting of Zimbabwe ignited the flame of imagination for Inson Wongsam one more time.
During the West approach development on art admired the individual and artwork from institute as a high class of art, it affected the handicrafts which was a product of lifestyle and community culture by judging them as an equipment invented from local. Inson Wongsam was an artist who went far away and back to find his self again found that a process of making tools was harmonized with life and community culture. It was a wisdom product of human to show his lifestyle harmonizing nature. The exhibition titled Art Exhibition by Inson Wongsam at Sri Nakornping art gallery, Chiang Mai province. Within an exhibition showed carving on wood, stone, and silk batik, this showed the interest of Inson Wongsam on local handicrafts especially in Lamphun province, his hometown, full of craftsman and top-grade handicraft shaped a special self of Inson Wongsam.
Inson Wongsam was an artist who created works regularly. He never stopped finding experience and new approaches to create artwork from his diligence and attempt in a position of Thai sculptor who created the valuable artworks, and he was accepted both in Thailand and abroad. Inson Wongsam was honored to be a national artist in visual art (sculpture) in 1999.

Thongchai Rakpathum is another Thailand’s leading artist chosen to be a Thai National Artist in Visual Arts (painting) in 2010. Not only that he was among the last students of Professor Silpa Bhirasri, the father of modern art in Thailand, but also he was a senior government official who devoted himself to progressively move and reform Bunditpatanasilpa Institute (former name, College of Fine Arts) for 30 years. He is a true government-official artist who worked hard to fulfill his role as a Thailand’s government official. Meanwhile, he has never forgotten his true profession and spared any time possible to do his beloved painting which, in the other way, fulfills his role as an artist and as a human being.

In Chiang Rai Province, he was born into a peasant family. Rivers, mountains, and a beautiful culture and tradition surround you. Going to the temple to make merit on a regular basis as part of a family that respects and believes in Buddhism. He was a Buddhist enthusiast as a child. I enjoy visiting temples with my grandmother and have always enjoyed drawing since I was a toddler.
Following the Lanna people’s traditions, it’s time to be ordained as a novice after finishing primary school. did not pray as anticipated, but returned to Mae Chan Wittayakom School to pursue secondary studies. I learned that I needed to be competent at art since I was the school’s representative in submitting a picture contest and winning a national award.

Prateep has relied on his drawing skills ever since
he was young. It was the only thing that kept him
striding through his adversities in childhood, as a
teenager, and as an adult. He is now a working artist
that specialises in surrealism, using rich imagery that
encapsulate emotions, experiences, conflicts,
difficulties, dreams, and painful realities. Many
observers of his work may find these images frightening,
as his work is based on the realities of life with a mix of
creativity and imagination. At present, Prateep is best
known for his legendary work in advertising and as a
leading artist representing the surrealist genre in Thailand.
His work is celebrated globally, with some pieces being
privately held by an international mogul and business owner.
The Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) in Bangkok
holds the largest collection of Prateep Kochabua’s work,
exhibiting them on a revolving basis.
